2 cups stale or dried bread, cut into ½-inch cubes (raisin bread, cinnamon bread or old cinnamon buns may be used)
2 cups milk
3 tbsp. melted butter
¼ cup sugar
2 beaten eggs
Dash of salt
1 tsp vanilla
½ cup raisins or dried cranberries (optional)
Making the Pudding
Preheat oven to 325 degF.
Butter a baking dish or casserole.
Combine dry ingredients in a medium bowl, then add wet ingredients, mixing by hand or with a large spoon.
Transfer mixture into baking dish and bake for one hour.
Check for doneness by inserting a clean knife or long toothpick. It is finished when the knife comes out clean.
Allow to set for five minutes, then serve.
Top with maple syrup, chocolate sauce, caramel or fruit preserves and enjoy!
